Description:
AD MANAGER OUT WEST

Our profitable, well-established newspaper publishing company in the beautiful Wind River Country of central Wyoming again is considering applicants for the position of advertising director. The job is open because the candidate we thought we had hired encountered an unexpected problem at home and no longer can make the move. So we are starting over in our search for a VINP (Very Important Newspaper Person). The situation is this: Our seven-person department sells ads for a 7,000 circ daily, two weeklies and two shoppers, with a combined Sunday edition of 10,000. The newspaper business is strong in Wyoming, and our print publications are the priority. But our prize-winning daily newspaper website has developed a successful subscriber revenue stream, with a sensible advertising plan the next step to come. We are a family owned business with an experienced second-generation publisher who needs a hands-on, encouraging team builder to work with an ad staff of good ability and varied experience.

We've been a vital community leader here for 65 years, and our ad director is an important figure both internally and externally. A collegial, supportive work ethic is the only kind that will work here. In other words, if you are a screamer, a scowler and a blamer, then please don't apply for this position. Read that last sentence again. It's the truth. But if you are a helper, a problem-solver, and a customer server looking for a good job in one of America's fine places, this could be your job.

We are picky about who we hire here. If the right person doesn't come along, then we won't hire anybody. We'd rather leave the job open than hire the wrong person. The right is someone with commitment to newspapers, a creative mind for promotion, a calm, fair approach to management, and an understanding of and appreciation for small-city living. If that's you, then you could thrive with us.

Of course we would like experience in newspaper sales management, but an ambitious sales person looking for a shot at being a department head will be considered as well. Compensation is in the form of salary, sales commission, revenue share and bonus. The previous manager topped $50,000. That's good pay in our part of the country.

Our city of 11,000 and our county of 40,000 do not offer a big-city, urban lifestyle. If you need Starbucks on every corner, look elsewhere. But we are in the shadow of the Wind River range, 100 miles from Yellowstone and Grand Teton parks, and a stone's skip from fine outdoor recreation, all in a nice town with a community college, good schools, hospitals, libraries, museums, bike paths and commercial air service.
