The Capital Journal in Pierre, South Dakota is an aggressive, growing state capital newspaper with an ambitious expansion plan. We need a versatile, energetic and creative reporter who understands the responsibility of community journalism, but is also intrigued by the potential for a statewide or even national audience. Interest or expertise in covering a state legislature and state government would be a huge asset. The position is general assignment and would include several beats. Interest or background in hunting and fishing would also be an asset. There is plenty of opportunity for enterprise and the successful applicant will be joining a staff that cares about the community and community journalism. We tell the stories of the people of central South Dakota and plan an ambitious expansion including a statehouse bureau, news service and a weekend edition. The Capital Journal is more than just a newspaper. We are a media company and as such, we use social media, the Web, Flickr, Vimeo, Cover-it-Live, text updates and a variety of methods in addition to the print product to keep South Dakota readers informed. The candidate does not need to be a social media pro, but a willingness to learn is essential. A journalism background and at least two years of professional newspaper experience is preferred, but recent college journalism graduates are encouraged to apply. Digital photography and videography skills are a plus but not required.
