Description:

STATE CAPITAL NEWS EDITOR

The Capital Journal seeks applications and resumes for the position of News Editor. The ideal candidate also will be able to serve as editor and lead writer for the Capital Journal’s newly launched magazine, South Dakota Outdoors. The Capital Journal is an award-winning, five-day morning daily newspaper, in the capital city of South Dakota. The newsroom won 12 first-place awards and 26 awards total in newspaper competitions in 2013. The Capital Journal has a paid daily circulation of about 4,500 with a rapidly growing web presence. It is owned by Wick Communications, now in its third generation of family ownership with newspapers across several states.

The Capital Journal is the paper of record for central South Dakota and is planning an aggressive expansion to become the primary source of state government news for the entire state. Recent upgrades to its website and renewed emphasis on photography, video, breaking news updates and links.

Pierre is a fast-growing city of 15,000 in central South Dakota with the feel, energy, heart and compassion of a small town. Pierre is home to first-class outdoor recreation with some of the best hunting, fishing, hiking, camping and other outdoor activity in the United States. It was ranked the No. 1 community in the U.S. for bird hunting opportunities in a list put together earlier in 2013 by Pheasants Forever.

Pierre, home to over 4,000 state employees, is one of the youngest and highest educated communities in South Dakota.  The Missouri river runs through Pierre and Lake Oahe is close.  For a community of its population, 15,000, it is culturally rich and engaging.

Our news editor position is a hands-on leadership job that answers directly to the managing editor and works closely with other department managers across the company. Interest in outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing and hiking is a huge advantage for the successful candidate. Expectations include:

  • Ability to recognize and tell great stories in a variety of formats, including some long-form journalism for use in our newspaper and our two magazines, Land & Livestock and South Dakota Outdoors.
  • Ability to edit copy, write headlines, stories and editorials when needed. A design background is a plus.
  • Ability to coach reporters and develop staff.
  • Understanding that Pierre is both a vibrant community and the capital of South Dakota. State politics and government must be integrated with local news.
  • Familiarity with new media and willingness to help us continue our web and social media presence.
  • Appreciation for the value/appeal of news presentation, visual design and photojournalism and willingness to continue the newspaper’s
  • Ability to shine as a team player. This is a small newspaper and communication in the newsroom and across all departments is crucial.
  • Awareness and appreciation of local and statewide politics.  We are the capital city and the community is rich in local history. Politics is in the air and this job is not for those with a thin skin.

The successful candidate likely has been successful in other community newspaper newsrooms. A college journalism degree or in a related field is expected.

The Capital Journal is a great place to work, beyond its outstanding geographical and community aspects:

  • We offer competitive pay, 401K retirement plan/match, paid vacation, a top-notch major medical plan and relocation assistance.
  • You will find competent, friendly managers and staff throughout the organization.
