Division and Unit Overview
 
The mission of the Office of Public Affairs (within Secretary & General Counsel Division) is to facilitate communication and advocacy for the American Chemical Society and its members in order to advance chemistry and promote its value to the public and policymakers. Communications efforts increase member and public awareness of chemistry’s critical role in society. The Digital Services team, a subunit of Science Communications, acts as the ACS’ internal video production group, developing video and graphic projects for the Office of Public Affairs and other ACS divisions.
 
The Digital Services team is looking for a senior writer/producer to join its award-winning video production team. The incumbent will work with the manager of digital services to write and produce entertaining, educational videos for the popular Bytesize Science YouTube channel, which reaches millions of viewers around the world with videos uncovering the chemistry of everyday life. The lead writer/producer will also conceptualize, write and produce videos for other ACS divisions, including ACS Publications, Education, and the Green Chemistry Institute, among others. A passion for science, expert writing/communication skills and previous experience in digital video are essential.
 
Position Summary
 
This position reports to the Digital Service Manager. The incumbent in this job singlehandedly conceptualizes, writes, films, edits and produces high-quality videos for the OPA and interdepartmental clients. The incumbent also promotes video content using social media and other means, establishing relationships with journalists and key bloggers. The Senior Producer role requires an experienced background as a science writer, basic skills in digital video production and a proven ability to effectively bring complex projects to completion with minimum oversight, as well as providing leadership and guidance for junior staff and multiple clients.
 
1. Leads content production and development by researching, writing, organizing and editing videos for publications in ACS video series like Bytesize Science.
2. Leads a complex project from initiation to completion by leveraging his/her ability to define the project scope/approach, by incorporating input from Digital Production Associates throughout the project lifecycle and by driving solutions to reach final outcomes
3. Acts as a lead designer for ongoing video series develops broadcast-quality template graphics to guide the work of other staff members. Applies science-writing skills in producing press releases, video scripts and blog posts. Manages the client relationship and set expectations throughout the project; ensuring high levels of customer satisfaction
4. Executes entire video projects from start to finish; including multiple functions such as research, project planning, script development, filming, interviewing, editing, designing, animating, narrating and distributing the video online.
5. Develops innovative video promotion techniques and initiatives that help ACS videos go viral and earn recognition in contests and film festivals for outreach program. The incumbent in this role develops ongoing relationships with key bloggers and journalists, significantly contributing to reach larger audiences worldwide.
 
Required Experience
 
College degree (relevant field) or equivalent experience; usually has an advanced degree (relevant field) or equivalent experience. 5+ years of related experience. Must have previous experience in science writing and creating online videos, an understanding of design fundamentals, customer service skills and extensive usage and understanding of social media. Knowledge of Photoshop, Final Cut Pro and other relevant software is required. Proficient at conveying design and business requirements in the scientific arena.
