Description:

The New York Law Journal is the paper of record for the legal community in New York State. The Law Journal provides authoritative coverage of issues of importance to New York lawyers about state and federal courts, law firms, legal decisions, law schools, non profit groups, government agencies and bar associations.

The position of managing editor requires a candidate with strong organizational and managerial skills as well as an eye for detail. The ME also must have strong news sense; experience reporting, writing, editing, writing headlines and working with reporters to develop stories and improve copy; familiarity and comfort with print and digital and social media environments.

The ME will assist in building the day’s news edition, report when necessary, edit daily copy for both print and online, write headlines and interact with reporters and other editors and assist with digital publishing.

In addition, the ME must embrace the role of presentation editor for print, working closely with art team in approving layout and images in both daily and special reports; keeping the art team in the loop throughout the day; keep track of the edit calendar so all edit, art and production teams are able to meet daily, weekly, monthly and special edition deadlines.

The ME should have a penchant for numbers, enjoy working with data and spotting which data best illustrate a story; take primary role in creating tables, charts and other graphics; be able to write photo captions, monitor AP and competitive news sources an troubleshoot minor production problems.
The ME will have other administrative duties such as maintaining the staff vacation calendar, a record of staff meetings, etc.

This position also offers an enterprising journalist an opportunity to remake the look of the New York Law Journal in print and help develop enhancements and add-ons that would be available online. The ME also will keep a close eye on the journalism, working with reporters and editors to develop team-reported projects, series and special packages for print and online.
