Assistant Director, Media Relations & Editorial Content Office of Communications

Reports to: Director of Communications

Purpose of Position The Assistant Director, Media Relations and Editorial Content is involved in all aspects of the creation of accurate, engaging, and informative brand-based content for traditional media, social media, and emerging communication platforms in order to advance Vermont Law School.

Reporting to the Director Communications, the Assistant Director is responsible for creating content (primarily text, but also video, photography, and audio) across a wide range of channels (web, email, print, and social media) for the purposes of communicating and marketing Vermont Law School to prospective students, alumni, media, and philanthropic supporters. In addition, this role will serve as the prime contact for all local, regional, and national media, and build relationships when possible with selected media outlets. Ultimately, this role is responsible for both timely and “timeless” editorial content production.

Duties and Responsibilities Editorial Creation (50%) • Writes and edits copy for a broad range of VLS materials and channels, including the website, print, alumni magazine, email, social media, and advertising (online and print). • Incorporates VLS brand promise and pillars into copy, as well as techniques to improve relevance for both paid and natural search • Produces daily, weekly, and monthly content about VLS faculty, alumni, and programs that conveys its mission and purpose • Involved in production and editing of video, photography, and audio as needed

Media relations (30%) • Writes all press releases for distribution online and via Meltwater Press • Identifies and distributes press releases to media; monitors responses and follows-up when appropriate • Finds faculty experts to speak with reporters on deadline and distributes breaking news stories among relevant faculty to promote our own media response • Builds relationships with select national and regional media outlets regarding coverage of VLS faculty, students, and alumni • Monitors VLS appearances in the media; shares appearances when appropriate via social media and other channels, and prepares monthly internal report regarding all media appearances • Coordinates summer media fellows program, maintains relationships with former summer fellows, and updates related pages on the website

Social media and other (10%) • Maintains VLS social media presence on Facebook and Twitter, and other emerging media platforms • Identifies, establishes, and supports VLS presence on other media platforms (e.g., Flickr) as appropriate • Serves on VLS Communications Team in support of the Emergency Response plan • Performs other duties as assigned

Education, Skills, & Experience • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent • 3–4 years of increasingly responsible experience in media relations, political campaigns, public relations, or communications • Excellent writing and editing skills, with an ability to write clean copy quickly • Demonstrated ability to build networks and cultivate new relationships • Demonstrated ability to conceptualize and develop newsworthy stories • Familiarity with a broad array of communications tools and tactics in wide variety of media channels • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team • Familiarity with higher education and the law a plus
