Description:

The Chronicle of Philanthropy seeks a Database Reporter to join our dynamic team of reporters, researchers, and online journalists. You'll work with The Chronicle's editorial and technology teams in Washington, D.C., to help develop online and mobile applications, editorial projects, investigative reports, and stories based on our data. The ideal candidate will merge strong skills in SQL with a journalist’s eye, as well as a creative spirit that will help us identify new ways to present data about the nonprofit world.

 

Key responsibilities:

  • Work closely with The Chronicle's editorial and technology teams to identify, design, and launch projects that support progressive database journalism.
  • Identify ways to improve our internal data collection systems, scrape data from websites, and develop best practices for presenting data to readers in print, online, and on mobile devices.
  • Collect, analyze, and report on survey projects such as the Philanthropy 400, Executive Compensation survey, and Corporate Giving survey and identify ways to present these data in new ways.
  • Assist with the collection, analysis, and presentation of public data about nonprofits and donors.
  • Work with The Chronicle’s editors and reporters to identify creative and effective ways to visualize data for online and print and in interactive news projects.

 

 

Skills:

 

  1. Proficiency in SQL, Python, CSS, PHP, and JavaScript.
  2. Experience in iQuery, web scraping, and data visualization.
  3. In-depth knowledge of best practice and standards in relational database design, including data modeling and normalization.
  4. Experience with data design, operations, and management with a demonstrated track record of data integrity and efficient management of data assets.
  5. Strong attention to detail and proven experience managing complex projects
  6. Proficiency with statistical and mathematics concepts
  7. Ability to meet deadlines and work collaboratively as part of a team.

 

Qualifications:

 

1.       Bachelor's degree required.

2.       1-3 years of experience as a journalist or specialist working extensively with data in a newsroom environment required.

3.       Knowledge of nonprofits and how to access publicly available data about the nonprofit world a plus.

4.       Experience with Computer Assisted Reporting a plus.
