Description:

Feature Writer Job Opening

Wall St. Cheat Sheet is looking for a full-time feature writer to cover business and economic news. With a monthly audience of over 14 million unique readers, Wall St. Cheat Sheet is a forum for thoughtful, objective coverage of U.S. industry and government. We write on subjects ranging from new legislation arising from the financial crisis (e.g., TARP) to new tech products about to come to market (e.g., the new iPhone), and our feature writers are expected to be able to shift gears from one topic to another throughout the day.

Feature writers often have to work on a deadline, turning out multiple articles a day. A feature writer must be comfortable with varying styles of writing, and would ideally bring a strong, unique voice to his/her writing, as well as a sharp wit and the ability to recognize interesting news elements. A feature writer will often be called upon to suggest his/her own story ideas or angles through research, but should leave all personal prejudices at the door in the interest of remaining objective and maintaining Wall St. Cheat Sheet’s reputation for fair, honest coverage of the news.

Strong reading comprehension is essential, as is the ability to learn quickly and adapt to the varying and ever-changing demands of the job. Experience as a business or economics writer is not necessary, but the position does require that you develop a working knowledge of industry jargon. The ability to quickly grasp and make sense of complex or foreign issues is key.

Wall St. Cheat Sheet is and always has been a tight-knit team, and we intend to keep it that way as we expand. Anyone working with us must be a team player -- we are not competitors -- and contribute to the dynamic of mutual respect by giving helpful feedback and participating in regular group discussions on writing and editorial strategy.

The ideal job candidate will have a strong background in writing, whether through his/her studies or in a professional capacity. He/she should have a strong grasp of proper grammar and punctuation (e.g., Strunk & White’s The Elements of Style), and knowledge of AP style is a plus. This job contains opportunities for advancement for those who take initiative and go above and beyond the basic requirements of the position.

Please apply ONLY if you meet the following requirements:

  • 4-year college degree or equivalent work experience

  • Excellent writing and copywriting skills

  • The ability to learn and adapt quickly

  • A strong work ethic and pride in personal reliability

  • A passion for news writing

  • Be a team player

  • Close attention to detail and the ability to multitask

  • The ability to take direction and respond to constructive criticism

  • A specific understanding of journalistic writing and a commitment to its tenets

  • A working knowledge of search-engine optimization is preferred, but not required

To apply, please send your resume, cover letter, and a writing sample to jobs@wallstcheatsheet.com with the subject heading ‘Feature Writer.’

Please submit an email no larger than 500 KB. Any emails not meeting the above criteria will not be read.
