October 16, 2013
Job ID: 1528034

The NorCal Design Center, a new regional copy desk and newspaper production hub based in Chico, California, is seeking a dynamic visual journalist with management experience to join the center’s leadership team.

The deputy director should be able to wear many hats, but will chiefly be responsible for the overall quality and on-time delivery of 12 daily and six weekly and semi-weekly newspapers in Northern California operated by Digital First Media. The ideal candidate is passionate about newspaper design, and can both work on special projects and other high-level designs as well as help other designers perfect their craft. Communication will be key, as the deputy director will work with editors at the individual papers on copy flow and breaking stories, and will have to diplomatically enforce deadlines when necessary.

Ultimately, the deputy director will help foster a creative and enjoyable work environment and can collaborate with the director on solutions to improve efficiency and maximize the time staff can spend on good journalism and design. The ideal candidate will have management experience, a firm grasp of InDesign and design principles, an eagle eye, and high journalistic standards. Candidates with Saxotech and/or centralized pagination experience preferred.

The position likely will be filled around Jan. 1. To apply, please email a cover letter, resume and design samples to: Brian Pifer, NorCal Design Center director, at
