Gannett seeks an editor/vice president content for Des Moines Register Media in Des Moines, Iowa. This position requires an individual with the highest level of journalism credentials, rock-solid leadership skills, a deep understanding and proven track record of successes in the digital space and well-grounded business acumen that transcends the Newsroom. The successful candidate will advance the seamless integration of digital and print products. The editor must set the tone and strategic approach for content across all platforms. The Register and have forged a national reputation for high-impact watchdog journalism and authoritative coverage of such franchise topics as politics and agri-business. The ideal candidate would have a proven record of conceiving, guiding and executing meaningful, credible content that upholds that high standard of work. The editor must cultivate a deep understanding of the key audiences and communities to be served and create new approaches to more fully engage them. Additionally, the editor must work to balance customer needs with business imperatives, aligning resources to provide the greatest impact possible. The editor is also responsible for oversight of the Design Studio in Des Moines (also located in the Register building), which handles page design and layout for 21 Gannett newspapers. The Design Studio includes a team of designers, copy editors and managers. The Editor/Vice President Content reports to the President and Publisher.



  • Uphold the highest journalism standards across digital and print platforms, strongly support the First Amendment and execute watchdog reporting.
  • Lead planning and oversee execution of content strategies. Special emphasis is placed on digital and new media work. Creativity and an ability to develop and execute innovative approaches are essential.
  • Organize, manage and lead the newsroom staff by reinforcing the mission and strategic goals, structuring the department to succeed and providing compelling local content.
  • Identify, select and develop newsroom talent, and inspire the staff by providing meaningful feedback and creating opportunities for growth and achievement. Continually look for opportunities to build digital skill sets in all positions.
  • Oversee the Design Studio, ensuring that they meet the needs of the papers they serve, and uphold the expected quality and efficiencies.
  • Ensure the newsroom’s operational and newshole budgets are managed according to operational needs and priorities in accordance with the Publisher.
  • Facilitate strong community connections with a relevant editorial voice and personal interaction.



  • Bachelor’s degree plus 10 years experience in journalism with strong ethics and integrity.
  • Experience as a managing editor or top editor in a midsize market.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, strategic and business skills
