The Deseret News is seeking talented writers to produce enterprise stories about social issues in six areas:


·       Family

·       Faith

·       Personal finance

·       Education

·       Media values

·       Poverty solutions

We are especially interested in reporters who demonstrate an expertise in one of these areas of emphasis. These freelancers will write primarily for the Deseret News National Edition, with articles to appear on national.deseretnews.comand in a weekly print edition distributed across the country. Articles will also be published on deseretnews.comand in the daily local edition of the paper, and may be syndicated to partners around the world.


The Deseret News is part of a dynamic media company whose mission is to be a trusted voice of light and knowledge for a growing national audience focused on faith and family issues. The Project for Excellence in Journalism reported on innovations at the Deseret News:


Description of services

·       Pitch, report and write articles in the Deseret News areas of emphasis. We are especially interested in writers who want to freelance regularly (monthly or more) for us, but are also open to one-time pitches

·       Stories should be 1000-1500 words and employ the “nut graph” or “news feature” style established by the Wall Street Journal

·       Stories should be well sourced and include data that inform and illustrate the story, including a suggested graphic

Skills necessary

·       Writing that is thoughtful, enlightening, informative, rigorous, engaging and entertaining

·       Ability/willingness to develop stories beyond the routine. We are looking for someone who will ask more interesting questions, go beyond simple news releases and do thoughtful enterprise story development and research

·       Journalism and/or other professional training in critical/analytical thinking

·       Ability/willingness to work with professionals to cultivate a beat in a way that develops mutual trust and respect with national sources who can provide insight and perspective

·       Ability/willingness to take regular feedback and editing

·       Ability/willingness to write for Deseret News’ audience of people who care about issues of faith and family
