Description:

The Herald-Times located in Bloomington, Indiana is looking for a full time page designer/copy editor.

Bloomington is the home of Indiana University and is located approximately one hour south of Indianapolis.

 

Job description:

Read and check stories for accuracy, fairness, spelling, and grammar. Assist in the layout, design and editing of the newspaper and special sections/projects as needed.

Essential Functions: • Read, edit, and check stories in queues on computer • Read, edit and check proofs on paper • Determine wire stories to be used in the newspaper • Guard against libel • Write headlines and cutlines • Check graphics, tabs, and printed paper at night • Check proofs for typos • Match photos and cutlines • Match jumps • Answer phones, questions, and perform other job-related duties as assigned

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: •Has succinct writing, proofing and editing skills with a strong desire for accuracy, detail and compelling story-telling • Thrives in a fast-paced, highly productive and collaborative environment with strong organizational and multi-tasking skills • Designs eye-catching, "read me" newspaper pages, and can develop graphic elements that help tell a story or explain a process • Adapts to change, is open to new ideas, is a self-starter, practices self-development • Understands how to prioritize and streamline to meet daily deadlines • Shows strong news judgement, with the ability to change plans on the run when news breaks or stories fall through • Has excellent digital skills, with the abilility to post local material to newspaper's website and mobile outlets, use social media as a news outlet, use the Internet as a knowledge base for editing stories, and see opportunities to tell stories on all platforms, not just on the printed page • Acts on opportunity, generates new ideas, practices self-development •Versed in proper grammar, word usage, punctuation, AP style and typography •Proficient in editing and design software, with a focus on Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop

 

Experience: • Minimum 2 years experience design/editing for a professional newspaper preferred. Significant design experience with campus newspaper considered.

Education: • Bachelor’s Degree; Journalism, English, or Communications preferred

Work Schedule: 40 hours per week, nights and weekends.

Working Conditions: • fast paced environment with daily deadlines • Professional office environment
