Digital Media Managing Editor / Radar Desk Scrum Master


Hanley Wood is seeking a scrum master for its Radar Desk operation. Think of this role as a managing editor on interactive steroids. The Radar Desk is a digital-first B2B news operation designed to serve an array of audiences in the residential and commercial design and construction industries. This team is at the center of a hub-and-spoke news production process, and the scrum master ensures the team is meeting deadlines, curating news and creating compelling content. The Radar Desk functions as an innovation center within the organization.


The ideal candidate will be a journalist who understands technology (i.e. you know enough about Agile development to understand why we chose to call this person a scrum master rather than a managing editor) and has experience managing journalists, creating interactive content and working with various stakeholders to deliver compelling news and information. Knowledge of the building trades is highly desired.

Daily tasks, responsibilities, and accountability include:

  • Develop and curate content on various subjects, ranging from how-to stories to business advice to economic trends for market-leading brands that include Architect, Builder, Remodeling, Concrete Construction, Pool & Spa News and the Journal of Light Construction.
  • Curate internal and external content to assemble and push newsletters to narrowly targeted audiences within the construction trades.
  • Meet multiple daily deadlines for newsletter deployments.
  • Manage a team of content producers and collaborate across various stakeholders to create compelling content on a daily basis.
  • Use Agile development principles to manage a variety of ongoing projects and initiatives designed to innovate, boost efficiency and train co-workers.
  • Help develop enterprise support program for trouble-shooting, innovation releases, and on-boarding new staff
  • Measure analytics to gauge progress and work with audience development and content teams to conduct A/B testing, boost SEO, and ensure that open rates, click-through rates and site performance are constantly improving.

Skill-sets required:

  • Audience-centric digital journalism skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects across subject areas, timelines, editorial teams, etc.
  • Management and collaborative decision-chain experience
  • Team-building techniques, tactics
  • A sense of humor

Preferred Experience

  • Three-to-five years experience within a digital news organization.
  • At least one year of management experience.
  • Knowledge of print and digital production processes, including moving content between print edit systems and digital content management systems.
  • Subject matter expertise in any of the following subjects: building, architecture, remodeling, construction, design.
