Do you have a passion for covering issues of interest to the African American community in metro Detroit? Are you someone who’s good at managing people and processes? Are you organized, efficient and deadline-driven?

Then perhaps you could be the editor of B.L.A.C. Detroit magazine. B.L.A.C. stands for Black Life, Arts & Culture, and it’s a well-loved magazine that circulates throughout metro Detroit, drawing attention to people, places, events and issues of interest to the local African American community. is our online portal. 

As the editor of B.L.A.C., you’d:

  • Oversee the planning, assigning and production of B.L.A.C. Detroit content to meet magazine’s editorial focus and goals (print and digital content)
  • Edit and shape quality content for B.L.A.C. Detroit magazine and to meet deadlines and content goals in accordance with AP style
  • Participate in cover planning and tasks related to executing cover shoots
  • Collaborate with the Associate Publisher and Creative Director on monthly content plan and long-term planning
  • Manage freelancers, interns and staff, ensuring high quality work; recruit additional high quality freelancers and interns
  • Oversee B.L.A.C. Detroit social media entities
  • Oversee administration of advisory committees
  • Write editor’s letter and some content for B.L.A.C. Detroit products
  • Manage monthly editorial budget
  • Plan and collaborate on annual editorial calendar
  • Attend functions and events on behalf of B.L.A.C. Detroit

Candidate criteria and qualities:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, preferrable (or equivalent experience in journalism)
  • 5+ years of journalism experience
  • Understanding of AP style
  • Ability to use Mac computers and strong computer literacy
  • Understanding/knowledge of the African American community
  • Understanding/knowledge of the Detroit area and issues affecting it, or a strong demonstration of your ability to learn this fascinating beat
  • Ability to manage, cultivate and recruit freelancers and contributors
  • Ability to manage interns and editorial assistant, setting clear goals and getting the best work and efficiencies
  • Strong story sense and the ability to shape high quality content
  • Strong organization skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment
  • Ability to accept feedback, recommendations and decisions related to content and performance with professionalism and maturity
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and tasks at the same time and to be able to meet deadlines
  • Strong leadership and general management skills
  • Ability to think beyond your own interests and preferences and plan content that may not align with your personal taste but reflect the interests of others within our readership
  • Ability to work independently, as leader of the B.L.A.C. editorial team, to ensure ultimate goals for content are met on time
  • Ability to manage budgets, expenses and goals
  • Ability to represent B.L.A.C. at functions or events with confidence and professionalism
  • Tenacity in lining up sources and stories
