We are currently seeking a Communications Specialist (Content Developer) to join our firm-wide communications team in the New York, NY office. The Communication Specialist is responsible for gathering, writing, editing and strategically sharing HOK news and information with external and internal audiences.

The Communications Specialist (Content Developer) reports to the Public Relations Director and works closely with communications colleagues to prepare written content – including news releases, articles, and social media and web communications – to deliver HOK’s key messages. This individual regularly interacts with HOK design professionals and executives to research, gather and develop written content in alignment with the firm’s goals and objectives.

The successful candidate must be an exceptional writer, skilled at managing multiple projects concurrently and able to thrive in a fast-paced environment.


  • Research and write news releases, backgrounders, articles, whitepapers, blog posts, media pitches and talking points that highlight the firm’s key messages. (70 percent)
  • Develop specialized written content for websites, social media, newsletters and videos.
  • Cultivate and strengthen relationships with the media and respond to their requests for information.
  • Advise HOK’s people on public and media relations, including how to interact with reporters and editors and develop opportunities for strategic media coverage.
  •  Assist in developing communications plans.


  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, public relations or related field.

  • Four years of experience as a professional communicator within the architecture/design, commercial real estate or news media industries.
  • Must have significant experience developing written content for news and web communications, researching stories and interviewing subjects.
  • The ideal candidate will demonstrate an understanding of the issues and business drivers associated with the design and development of buildings, communities and interior spaces. 
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills.
  • Strategic thinking and planning skills; insightful judgment and innovative problem-solving ability.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Detail and results oriented.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Flexible with ability to manage multiple projects with demanding deadlines.
  • Familiarity with social media.
  • Strong proficiency in MS Office. Knowledge of Photoshop, InDesign and WordPress are beneficial.
