Wanted: Data Journalism Geeks
Job Status:  Freelance
Ad Expires:
February 10, 2014
Job ID: 1520949

SummaryVisually is expanding its Marketplace team of freelance data journalists - particularly those with experience and an interest in technology, mobile computing, health and science reporting and writing; marketing, presentations and content strategy development. Through the Visually Marketplace, journalists are directly connected with clients and work on a wide variety of data visualization/ infographic projects. Think of a project as researching a topic for an article, but writing an outline or script for an infographic instead. You will be teamed up with a designer, who will be responsible for molding your script into the infographic or data visualization in question. Our data journalists work remotely and get paid on a per-project basis.

The Job

  • Report/ research an assigned topic,
  • Mold the research (data) into a script/ infographic outline,
  • Work closely with a designer and the infographic commissioner, using our proprietary online project management center,
  • Represent Visually in a professional manner, with special attention to detail and respect for deadlines.

  • We have a passion for visual content in all formats: infographics, video, interactive graphics, presentations,
  • We are big on ethics in research and data visualization alike,
  • We are even bigger sticklers for proper sourcing of data and research,
  • Nothing irritates our editorial team more than seeing Wikipedia sourced at the bottom of an infographic - and we will train you in our method and standards, by which you will avoid it at all cost.

  • Have a degree in Journalism or another field that has trained you to do original research and proper sourcing and citation;
  • Have 3+ years of experience working in a newsroom, or as a full-time freelance professional;
  • Have a way with words, and by that we mean you can say more with less;
  • Have a knack for telling stories with data (and can explain what that is without using such buzz words);

Bonus points for experience in or a passion for:

  • technology (software, hardware, cloud computing, mobile computing, the works!)
  • health and science reporting/ writing
  • marketing
  • presentations
  • corporate communications
  • content strategy development

Interested? Please email your resume, cover letter and at least three samples of published work to jobs+djournalist @ Please note that applications that lack either of the items mentioned above will not be considered.
