American Progress is looking for a versatile and creative Art Director to manage and work with the Art Team. The Art Director is responsible for extending a consistent visual identity across all products. We are seeking a talented, experienced designer who enjoys working hands-on with rich material but can also play an important leadership role by managing a small in-house design and video team, and by communicating effectively on design issues at the highest levels of the organization.

The Art Director will manage a team that creates reports, infographics, web graphics, interactive media, marketing materials, and video storytelling. He or she will help American Progress communicate progressive ideas and arguments through clear, visually compelling design. He or she will also handle the layout and production of print publications, as well as visuals and design for the web. He or she will serve as the point person for the Art department and will also be responsible for managing project workflow and meeting requests. 

Responsibilities:

  • Manage print and graphic workflow.
  • Moderate weekly pitch meetings for design requests.
  • Develop and extend American Progress’s visual brand on strategic and tactical levels.
  • Update the design and templates of American Progress’s print products.
  • Manage, design, lay out, and produce reports, briefs, and other publications, often including photos and using magazine-style visual techniques.
  • Manage, design and lay out books and book-length reports.
  • Create charts, graphs, and infographics from data, working with report authors.
  • Work with print vendors to produce all printed materials for American Progress and ensure they arrive on schedule.
  • Manage print invoices and work with the Finance department to ensure timely payment to vendors.
  • Develop graphics for web and video on an as-needed basis.
  • Collaborate with the web and Email teams on visual branding across a wide range of online media.

Requirements and qualifications:

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to lead a team.
  • Ability to communicate design decisions to lay audiences.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in graphic design or a related major, or at least six years of professional design experience.
  • A strong portfolio of design work.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills and attention to detail.
  • Highly creative.
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience in journalism and/or nonprofits a plus.
  • High-level experience with Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop in a Mac OS X environment, as well as with the Microsoft Office suite.
  • Commitment to organization’s mission and goals.

Not required, but highly desirable:

Experience and proficiency with:

  • Infographic and news design
  • Prepress processes
  • Typography
  • Web design, especially designing with web standards
  • Photography
