Description:

The nonprofit Berkeley-based Bay Nature Institute is seeking to hire an Editorial Director to oversee creation and production of editorial content. The Institute, a respected and independent voice for Bay Area nature and the region’s conservation community, publishes the quarterly Bay Nature magazine and hosts the Baynature.org website. The Editorial Director also has responsibility for the efficient functioning of the systems that enable and facilitate the timely publication of the quarterly magazine.

The Editorial Director is a full-time exempt employee. The position offers a journalism professional with experience in print and digital publications and a demonstrated interest in the environment the opportunity to help connect Bay Area residents with the natural world of the region and to help a respected media nonprofit reach a broader audience.

The Editorial Director reports to the Publisher/Executive Director.

1.Bay Nature Magazine

a. The Editorial Director has primary responsibility for overseeing the creation and production of each quarterly issue of Bay Nature magazine.

b. The Editorial Director coordinates production of the magazine with the Publisher, graphic designer, and printer.

2. Baynature.org Website

The Editorial Director has overall responsibility for overseeing production and placement of content on Baynature.org, including material from magazine, as well as additional related and unrelated content.

3. Administrative

Editorial Director has overall responsibility for certain tasks to ensure the efficient operation of Bay Nature magazine and Baynature.org, including tracking of budgets, recruitment and training of editorial interns, and maintenance of editorial calendar.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

-       Demonstrated experience covering conservation issues as a writer and editor

-       Demonstrated experience in production of print publications

-       Experience in producing and editing online content; use of industry-standard CMS (Wordpress) a distinct plus

-       Knowledge of Bay Area conservation issues and natural history a distinct plus

-       Excellent writing and editorial skills a must

-       Well organized

-       Ability to work collaboratively

-       Ability to juggle simultaneous tasks

 

HOURS AND PAY

This is a full-time exempt position with starting pay of $52,000–$58,000 DOE, with full benefits, including health plan coverage. Hours are flexible, but fall mostly within normal business hours, and mostly at our west Berkeley office.
