The Associated Press seeks an Editor - West Regional Desk in its Phoenix, AZ location.

Editors on the West Desk edit and file the top news in a 13-state region comprised of Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, California, Alaska and Hawaii. They are part of a dynamic, 24/7 operation and work with editors from photo, multimedia, video and broadcast to ensure AP owns the coverage in all formats. Editors report to the assistant editor, and they work closely with news editors and reporters in bureaus around the region to make sure AP content is accurate, well-written, packaged creatively and timely. Editors ensure that urgent news is filed promptly, while keeping an eye toward developing the story throughout the news cycle and beyond. Working with news editors, regional desk editors direct, assign and coordinate with reporters covering the most important stories in the territory. Regional desk editors edit stories for the AP's global audience and work closely with editors from other formats to package content. Jobs on the West Desk will give editors a chance to work on the biggest national stories and in different formats. Editors must be available to work all days and shifts.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have two or more years of professional news experience, including editing. Editors must have a history of editing creatively so stories appeal to state, national and global audiences. Editors must show the ability to craft thorough stories on deadline in a competitive atmosphere. Editors must show a broad understanding of state, national and international news perspectives. Editors must have outstanding news judgment, with a history of generating unique story ideas in a competitive environment. Editors must be able to spot trends and guide reporters and news editors during the enterprise reporting and writing processes. Editors must show the ability to cooperate and direct reporters and editors remotely, and reorder priorities quickly and juggle multiple tasks. They should have a history of working as part of a team that includes editors from multiple formats, news editors and reporters, and they should be able to embrace new technology and alternative storytelling techniques. Experience in multiple formats is a plus. Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English language is required. Authorization to work in the United States for any employer is mandatory.
