Description:

The Public Safety Reporter produces content for publication across GMG’s range of digital and print publications, but primarily for lasvegassun.com and Sun print. This includes breaking news, enterprise journalism, still photos and video.

  • Covers the public safety beat on a regular basis, including providing on-scene reporting of accidents, fires, crimes, etc.
  •  Produces enterprise stories and digital content on crime trends, significant incidents, crime statistics and other matters of interest from the public safety beat
  •  Produces long-term projects from the public safety beat using a combination of text and multimedia components
  •  On an as-needed basis, serves as a general-assignment reporter for coverage of topics from beyond the public safety beat.
  •  Generates compelling, unique and engaging story/content ideas
  •  Produces stories that are thorough, accurate, grammatically and stylistically correct, professional and relevant to GMG’s audience
  •  Monitors emergency response communications, web-based sources (social media, official websites, etc.) and other media for breaking news and story ideas
  •  Develops and maintains a broad network of sources from the public safety beat
  •  Provides real-time coverage of breaking news and uses social media to disseminate and promote content
  •  Travels to scenes to provide on-site reporting, but also is capable of obtaining information via phone, email, social media, etc.
  •  Provides acceptable still images and video using a smart phone
  •  Maintains a working knowledge of the GMG newsroom content management system, as well as photo and video processing systems
  •  Routinely uses Freedom of Information Act requests, combs public information databases and seeks information from whistleblowers to obtain content for watchdog reporting projects
  •  Strives to use maps, digital databases and other digital tools to tell stories or provide complementary information

Minimum requirements:

  • B.S. in journalism or related field; or five years experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
