POSITION:   MLP Foundation Development Associate  


JOB DESCRIPTION: As a member of MacNeil/Lehrer Production’s Development and Communications team, the Foundations Development Associate plays a vital role ensuring the economic viability of the PBS NewsHour, America’s most trusted TV news program, as well as quality documentaries and programs produced by MacNeil/Lehrer Productions.  Reporting to the Chief Revenue Officer and the Director of the Friends of the NewsHour, the Development Associate will coordinate with senior members of the Development Team to support the operations of the grant activities for the PBS NewsHour and MLP. 


While responsibilities relate to revenue generation funder management and development, journalism experience is a plus. The position additionally involves interaction with producers and some story development as they pertain to funded beats/desks. The Foundation Development Associate must be a strong writer, as well as a self-starter who can work independently with minimal supervision, while also functioning well in a team environment. The job calls for someone with a keen sense of purpose, who possesses experience and insights into the world of fundraising, and displays good judgment about priorities. This is a critical position as it as it affects future funding of the NewsHour.  This person will be called on to:


  • Provide on an ongoing basis, in-depth research on possible new funders – corporate, foundation, individual – for PBS NewsHour and MLP that is then shared on a monthly or more frequent basis with the rest of the development team. This research must include up-to-date information on giving patterns and trustees, as well means of contact. 
  • Stay in the loop with the beats, producers and senior staff to have a good sense of what they are covering, to discover potential topics for targeted grants, and to suggest story ideas
  • Manage all funder credits spanning all platforms (broadcast, online, etc)
  • Write draft proposals and reports for funders that speak to our needs and their requirements
  • Brainstorm fundraising ideas with the development team
  • Track grant due dates and reporting requirements
  • Act as event planner for development and funder related gatherings
  • Coordinate development projects from concept through conclusion, including mailings, events and invoices
    • Create promos for  upcoming NewsHour segments and reels for funders
  • Maintain relationships with Foundation program officers, MLP strategic partners,  and all public broadcasting partners including CPB,  PBS and the local stations
  • Act as a liaison with the NewsHour’s 501(3) (c) partners.  


Since we have a small staff, the Foundations Development Associate is also responsible for providing administrative and clerical assistance as needed.


 The Foundation Development Associate also works closely with the Communications department and will maintain the MLP Website and keep the Friends of the NewsHour up to date. Additionally, this individual will be responsible for maintaining a periodic newsletter to be sent to all Friends of the NewsHour outlining our most recent accomplishments and upcoming Friends events.


QUALIFICATIONS:  A Bachelor’s degree along with 3-5 years of experience working in the development field – or, experience as a journalist. The candidate must have strong written and verbal skills; very good organizational and research skills; efficient work habits; the ability to work independently; and, a willingness to learn new skills as needed.  She or he must have a track record of careful attention to detail, accuracy, prioritization and follow through. The position requires a proactive sense of urgency and resourcefulness. Some late nights and event attendance required.  


Excellent computer skills (proficiency with Microsoft Office including Excel) and a comfort with new technology are required.  Knowledge of Photoshop and Final Cut Pro or Adobe Creative Suite is beneficial.  Familiarity with video production and an interest in journalism is desired.


The Foundation Development Associate will report to Michael Rancilio, Chief Revenue Officer, and will work closely with the Development team.


SALARY: Starting at $34,300; commensurate with experience
