We are looking for motivated and creative reporters who want the rare and challenging opportunity of launching a new community newspaper serving Long Beach,  a city of almost 500,000, and neighboring communities.

The publication and staff will be part of our busy local news operation, which includes the daily Orange County Register and 25 weekly, semiweekly and five-day community newspapers (combined digital/print circulation is 280,000-plus daily and 385,000-plus on Sundays).

The successful candidates will cover issues and breaking news with a local focus, but also will occasionally produce regional stories for the Register that are of interest in our vibrant and growing Southern California coverage area consisting of more than 30 cities with a population of more than 3 million people.

We are seeking candidates to fill several positions focused on the following beats:
- Government and Politics, including election coverage, city hall, state Legislature and federal government
- Education, including K-12, community colleges, universities, and educational trends and policies
- Sports, including youth sports, high school prep sports and university sports
- Business, including local businesses, trends and issues. This beat will include coverage of local hospitals from a business angle.

Candidates should be college graduates with at least five years of experience at a daily, weekly or online news organization. They should have solid clips, strong references and a demonstrated history of:
- Being flexible in adapting to daily news demands
- Producing solid, engaging, well-sourced daily and weekly print and online stories on stories relevant to the particular beat
- Developing sources and beating the competition
- Being accurate and fair
- Creative storytelling
- Showing passion in finding and pursuing great stories
- Working collaboratively with fellow reporters, editors, photographers and other team members

The job will entail occasional night, weekend and holiday work, and candidates must be able to represent the Register in a positive and professional manner. Spanish language skills are a plus.

We offer a chance to grow professionally in vibrant Southern California -- a great place to live featuring a competitive news environment -- along with a competitive salary based on experience and a comprehensive benefits package.
