Digital First Media's Thunderdome operation is seeking a news producer to work with our politics channel manager in Washington, D.C. This is a full-time position and requires the person filling it to live in the D.C. area for hands-on duties. We also are recruiting news producers and a breaking-news producer to our home office in New York. Previous applications for those positions still are being considered and those applying are welcome to apply for the D.C. position as well, but please specify if you have a preference and/or want to be considered for both locations.

The producer positions reqire someone with multiple digital skills and solid journalism abilities. This is a fantastic opportunity to join a company and a special team that sees the future as now. We're not afraid to try new things while still holding to traditional journalism values.

We provide a variety of services to our 70-plus daily and numerous non-daily news sites, including The Denver Post, Salt Lake Tribune, Detroit News, El Paso Times, San Jose Mercury News, Boulder Daily Camera, New Haven Register, St. Paul Pioneer Press, and many others.


      o   Creating, editing and producing content for Digital First Media properties, which includes 70-plus daily newspapers and their digital entities.

o    Basic Web production, including editing copy, writing headlines and incorporating photos and video

o    Creating alternative storytelling approaches for daily and long-range content

o    Producing compelling, recurring features that help build an audience over time

o    Occasionally reporting and writing breaking news

o    Assisting other sections with producing or reporting as necessary

·     o    Communicating with editors and reporters at DFM properties and working with them to plan event coverage.

·     o    Assisting in the identification and evaluation of potential partners and vendors in the vertical areas supported by Thunderdome.

The Web producer must be flexible and willing to adapt to changing conditions as Thunderdome evolves.

Requirements & Qualifications

·         A bachelors’ degree in journalism or communications and two years of digital journalism experience after college are desired.

·         Exceptional grasp of current storytelling and social media tools and experience producing for the web.

·         Excellent organizational, verbal and written skills.

·         Familiarity with databases and history of generating ideas for interactives is a plus.

·         Strong and consistent news judgment in a breaking news environment, with an eye for detail, a facility with technology and a knack for working well with others in a high-pressure, professional environment.

·         Flexibility and willingness to work beyond normal work hours as assignments demand, since the news cycle is unpredictable.
