REPORTER OPENING

The Valley Morning Star, a 20,000-circulation daily newspaper in Harlingen, Texas, is looking for a versatile reporter who is savvy in the use of social and digital media in a journalistic setting. We are looking for an energetic and organized individual who can adapt to a variety of assignments including coverage of local government, education and politics, spot news, feature writing and investigations. The reporter must be able to write in a deadline setting. Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree, preferably in journalism or communications, and possess strong writing and reporting skills. Applicants must have a car. Spanish-language skills are a plus but not mandatory. Our reporters contribute to our sister AIM Media newspapers in McAllen and Brownsville.

About Our Newspaper

The Valley Morning Star has served Harlingen and surrounding cities in Cameron County for more than 100 years. The Star emphasizes community reporting, and we pride ourselves on being the most comprehensive news source for our communities on a variety of platforms, and have seen steady increases in our online and mobile readership. The staff covers a variety of community topics of national prominence such as health care, immigration, crime, courts and border security. We offer an outstanding benefits package that includes vacation, health insurance and a 401K plan.

About the Region

Our circulation area, with a population of 125,000, is located in the semi-tropical Rio Grande Valley, on the U.S. border with Mexico and near the sugary-sand beaches of South Padre Island. We have a rich heritage, numerous annual festivals, thriving communities with shopping, abundant opportunities for birdwatching and eco-tourism, and a favorable cost of living. The weather is ideal for outdoor activities, with some 234 sunny days a year.
