REPORTS TO:   Managing Editor of Poynter Online


OVERALL JOB RESPONSIBILITY
The overall job responsibility of the Online Reporter is to report, write, and produce the MediaWire blog on Poynter Online.


POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

• Monitors news to identify relevant stories about journalism for Poynter publishing.

• Writes and produces multiple aggregated, analytical and original stories daily for Poynter Online, reflecting a diversity of sources, issues and interests to match the communities that journalism serves and the new ways those communities access information. Mixes assigned and enterprise work with a special emphasis on breaking news and business news. Content will meet highest journalistic standards of accuracy, clarity and consistency with AP style.

• Models excellence in craft and maintains the high journalistic standards established by the Institute as stated in Poynter’s Ethics Guidelines (http://www.poynter.org/ethicsguidelines).

• Uses all effective means to distribute content and build audience for Poynter publishing, including but not limited to Twitter, Facebook, and other social media.

• Participates in planning of online and publications initiatives.

• Other duties as assigned.


RELATIONSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:  Incumbent reports to the Managing Editor of Poynter Online, and works closely on a day-to-day basis with the News Editor of Poynter Online. The Managing Editor of Poynter Online is responsible for monitoring incumbent’s progress and performance and will conduct the annual performance review with the News Editor. There is considerable latitude in the way and order in which tasks are accomplished. 

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:  None.


INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS
INTERNAL:  The Online Reporter will have email and telephone contact with Poynter faculty, administration and staff, as needed.

EXTERNAL:  He or she will have relationships with journalists around the country, both as sources and as subjects of coverage.


POSITION SPECIFICATIONS
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:  Bachelor’s degree required with a minimum of two to three years of experience.  The Online Reporter must have a strong background in reporting, writing and editing.

PROBLEM SOLVING/DECISION MAKING:  Especially because of the unusual independence afforded to this position, incumbent must have a strong journalistic judgment and attention to detail.


WORKING CONDITIONS
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  This position is primarily sedentary, as bulk of tasks is performed at a computer. Physical requirements include ability to see and color perception in order to proofread, edit on paper and onscreen, and create and view graphics. The Online Reporter must have the ability to manipulate fingers to operate computer keyboard and mouse. He or she will be expected to work under and meet precise deadlines. Routine interruptions and unforeseen assignments are to be expected.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Working full-time at The Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Fla., is strongly preferred. Telecommuting is an option if necessary. In the latter case, incumbent would decide where tasks are performed (i.e. home office, library, etc.) with working visits to Poynter throughout tenure.
