TITLE:    Digital Media Fellow

DEPARTMENT:   Online

REPORTS TO:   Managing Editor of Poynter Online


OVERALL JOB RESPONSIBILITY
The Digital Media Fellow is responsible for writing and reporting on emerging digital tools and mobile’s growing presence in journalism. The Fellow will help Poynter.org build its mobile presence and will also be expected to occasionally teach in Poynter seminars and Webinars.


POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
• Contributes 4-5 reported and/or analytical stories per week for publication on Poynter.org, as guided by the  Managing Editor. Subject matter will be focused on digital media, primarily but not exclusively mobile media and social media. Content will meet highest journalistic standards of accuracy, clarity and consistency with AP style.

• Generates original story ideas about topics of importance to journalism and its future.

• Teaches sessions about mobile and social media in Poynter seminars, as requested by faculty or Dean.

• Participates in mobile and social media Webinars for Poynter’s News University, as requested by faculty or Dean.

• Draws on programming and responsive design skills to help Poynter.org grow its presence on mobile devices.

• Models excellence in craft and maintains the high journalistic standards established by the Institute as stated in Poynter’s Ethics Guidelines (http://www.poynter.org/ethicsguidelines).

• Experiments with social media and other digital media to learn, report and model best practices.

• Participates in planning of online and publications initiatives.

• Other duties as assigned.


RELATIONSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:  The Managing Editor of Poynter Online is responsible for monitoring incumbent’s progress and performance.  There is considerable latitude in the way and order in which tasks are accomplished. The Digital Media Fellow is responsible for conducting daily and long-term assignments under general direction. He or she must be able to work independently and collaborate with others.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:  None.


INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS
INTERNAL:  Extensive collaboration with other members of Poynter Online department, faculty and staff is required.

EXTERNAL: Incumbent will be in contact with journalists at all levels in various media organizations and others in the process of reporting.

POSITION SPECIFICATIONS
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:  Bachelor’s degree required with a minimum of two to three years of experience.  Incumbent must have the ability to meet deadlines, think critically and act in accordance with Poynter's ethics and standards. The Digital Media Fellow must have experience reporting and writing, preferably in print, online and for broadcast. Advanced computer skills and programming experience are also a must, along with an understanding of digital journalism and social media. Incumbent must possess outstanding written and verbal communication skills.


PROBLEM SOLVING/DECISION MAKING:  The Digital Media Fellow must have the ability to work independently with excellent judgment and discretion about when to involve others.


WORKING CONDITIONS
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Primarily sedentary, as bulk of tasks is performed at a computer workstation. Physical requirements include ability to see and color perception in order to proofread, edit on paper and onscreen, and create and view graphics. Incumbent must have the ability to manipulate fingers to operate computer keyboard and mouse. Incumbent will be expected to work under and meet precise deadlines. Routine interruptions and unforeseen assignments are to be expected.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Working full-time at The Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Fla., is strongly preferred. Telecommuting is an option if necessary. In the latter case, incumbent would decide where tasks are performed (i.e. home office, library, etc.) with working visits to Poynter throughout tenure.
