The Chinook Observer, a thriving 113-year-old 5,000-circulation weekly newspaper with a robust online presence seeks an experienced reporter. This hard-news beat includes the cities of Long Beach and Ilwaco plus other government agencies, along with an interesting variety of other topics.

The Chinook Observer is the focal point for a dozen villages in a Cape Cod-like setting on Washington’s Pacific Coast at the mouth of the Columbia River. Our beat includes pristine Willapa Bay, source of one-sixth of the nation’s oysters. A major regional tourist destination, our population swells to 60,000 on peak summer weekends. Bolstering our reputation as a center for historical/cultural tourism is Lewis and Clark National Park.

The Chinook Observer has been honored in each of the past three years as one of the best newspapers in Washington. Individual staff members have won dozens of awards. Tom Hallman, the Oregonian’s Pulitzer Prize-winning feature writer, is a particular fan. “Your paper represents all that is good in journalism. You respect your readers, challenge them when need be, and remind them of the place and people in the community they call home,” Hallman recently commented.

We offer a competitive wage, a generous benefit package, and a warm and friendly office environment in a new Macintosh-based building. We work hard but have fun — the ocean beach is a short stroll from our office. We enjoy world-class restaurants, fantastic salmon and deep-sea fishing, bird watching and many other outdoor activities. Dynamic Astoria, Ore., with additional great restaurants, recreation facilities and shopping, is half an hour away. Portland is two and a half hours; Seattle three hours.

The Chinook Observer thrives with an eight-person staff, who also produce the Coast River Business Journal. Everyone is expected to be a team player, which includes helping phone and walk-in customers when the office manager needs assistance. This position calls for a calm but energetic professional with good interpersonal skills, impeccable integrity, objectivity and an ability to cheerfully multi-task.

Benefits include Paid Time Off (PTO), insurances and a 401(k)/Roth 401(k) retirement plan.  Send clips, resume and letter of interest to EO Media Group., PO Box 2048, Salem, OR 97308-2048, by fax to 503-371-2935 or e-mail
