The twice-weekly Carroll County News in Berryville, Ark., is seeking an aggressive, passionate Associate Editor; position is open now.  Carroll County News covers the most beautiful and diverse county in the state, if not the South, situated in the heart of the Ozark Mountains and smack dab in the middle of the best floating, hiking, rappelling and motorcycle cruising in the nation! Berryville, a wonderful and close-knit small city of 5,500 or so, is located in the center of the county – centered between the rural, agricultural community of Green Forest (pop. 2,800) and the funky, diverse, liberal tourist town of Eureka Springs (pop. 2,200).

The CCN Associate Editor is supervised by the Managing Editor for all of Carroll County Newspapers, which publishes the CCN as well as a weekly in Eureka Springs, two monthly magazines and two quarterly magazines, plus several websites and occasional special newspaper sections. Carroll County Newspapers is part of the Rust Communications family.
• The Associate Editor will proactively copy edit material submitted by two reporters, a photographer and several occasional freelancers and contributing columnists. This includes writing good headlines and photo cutlines. STRONG copy editing skills are required, as well as at least one year experience in hard news / beat reporting, or reporting during internships in the case of recent college graduates applying.
• The Associate Editor is the immediate supervisor over this staff and is responsible for making assignments as needed and helping manage each staff members' time and assignments to ensure the most important things are covered first, etc.
• The Associate Editor also will cover a few regular beats (i.e. a local school board and/or city council) as well as write editorials regularly (at least every other week) and contribute regularly to the Reporters' Notebook blog on the website,
• The Associate Editor will help manage and gather the paper's content each edition, proposing a detailed story budget based on completed and in-progress content.
• The Associate Editor is not responsible for paginating; rather, the AE will work closely with the paginator to proof the pages after they're finished and make necessary corrections, etc., before sending the pages to the press. However, the AE should be somewhat familiar with the basic functions — or willing and able to learn them — of InDesign, and able to make page corrections/changes him/herself if necessary. If you don't know InDesign yet but learn quickly that's just fine.
• The Associate Editor will oversee the CCN website, Twitter feed and Facebook page, and will learn and be expected to practice expert tricks for using social media and marketing techniques to help grow both sites and interact regularly with our readers. This includes updating the website with newspaper stories after each edition as well as posting at least one "fresh" feature, news feature or breaking news story per day from someone on staff.

The Associate Editor position salary will be in the mid- to upper 20s, depending on experience.  Full benefits offered including generous vacation policy and individual/family health, vision and dental, as well as a 401(k) plan and Flexible Spending Account debit card for health care costs/deductibles.

Applicants should email by Sunday, June 30, with their cover letter in the body of the email and attaching at least three samples of their work, but no more than seven. No phone calls, please. Equal Opportunity Employer.
