Senior Writer & Editor, Marketing & Communications

The Senior Writer & Editor researches and articulates complex programs that are fundraising priorities; s/he will portray complex medical concepts and programs in a credible and accessible style. These programs will have broad themes that span multiple departments and often engage numerous faculty. S/he will add substantial value to shaping these ideas by helping to identify, clarify, and confirm consensus amongst University thought leaders. In addition, s/he will create persuasive, informative, and inspiring proposals and descriptive documents targeted to Medicine & Biological Sciences Development’s(MBSD) internal and external constituents such as donors, prospective donors, Alumni, Trustees, faculty, and staff.

The Senior Writer & Editor is a key collaborator in identifying and articulating programs that will be: characterized by leading-edge science and technology; conceived as agenda-setting science; and require philanthropic investments ranging from $10M to well over $100M. The Senior Writer & Editor will be working with those creating a forward thinking research agenda commensurate with the University’s stature. These ideas will become the visionary and fundraising themes for a UCM fundraising campaign of $1B-plus.

S/he will provide editorial support across MBSD. The Senior Writer & Editor will serve as a leader and expert who will provide coaching and mentoring in writing to other writers and Campaign Associates in the department. 

The Senior Writer & Editor will work with faculty and administrators throughout the University of Chicago Medicine (UCM) and his/her fact-finding research may reach beyond UCM to include other areas of the university.

The Senior Writer & Editor will create persuasive, informative, and inspiring proposals and descriptive documents such as white papers targeted to MBSD’s internal and external constituents such as donors, prospective donors, Alumni, Trustees, faculty, and staff. The materials s/he creates will help build the case for substantial and transformational philanthropic gifts and will be a fundamental resource for fundraisers at MBSD as they identify gift opportunities for their donors and prospective donors.

The Senior Writer & Editor will produce products such as, but not limited to the following:

Case Statements
Feature articles for University or external publications.
Beats
Proposals for Principal Gift solicitations (primarily $5M and greater.)
Web content
Marketing Materials (White Papers, Faculty profiles, brochures, text for cultivation event invitations)

Education:

Required: Bachelor's degree in journalism, English, communications or a relevant field.

Preferred: Advanced degree in specialized field.

Experience:

Required

5 years of experience writing and editing either in journalism, corporate communications, or as a science writer.

Experience coaching other writers.

Proven expertise taking complex information and both synthesizing it to identify and clarify key issues and opportunities and developing a compelling message.

Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills.

A demonstrated ability to think creatively.

Ability to manage multiple details while adhering to a broader concept or purpose.

Ability to understand finance and quantitative documents.

Capacity for identifying and evaluating basic issues, for bringing together information from a variety of sources, and for selecting appropriate analytical and creative approaches in dealing with immediate responsibilities.

Meticulous attention to detail, the ability to respond to constantly shifting priorities, to exercise sound judgment, to anticipate problems and create solutions.

Preferred

Professional experience working as a journalist (or writer) for a high-profile media or communications organization.

Experience working in higher education, healthcare, or science.

Experience supervising and evaluating the work of other writers.

An interest and knowledge base in health care economics, medical research, and health care policy.
