Description:

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is looking for a talented news applications specialist to join its newsroom as it accelerates the AJC’s digital journalism.  This specialist will work with reporters, editors and others to design and build creative, meaningful products for the AJC’s digital platforms, including wired sites, tablets and smartphones. Additionally, the specialist will help support existing AJC apps. Candidates should have experience in successfully conceptualizing and building news apps, data visualizations, and interactive graphics. This position is part of a newsroom team that will make the AJC’s most important stories come alive in compelling and innovative ways for our digital readers. Because the existing team members come out of programming and data analysis, design sensibility and background is strongly preferred to complement the team. JOB DUTIES & TASKS:

  • Work as part of a newsroom team that will make AJC’s most important stories come alive in compelling and innovative ways for readers of our various digital platforms.
  • Work with AJC editors, reporters, producers and other specialists to establish the best means of telling news digitally.
  • Design, develop, code, test and debug news apps for wired and mobile platforms.
  • Turn the brainstorming of non-technical colleagues into workable digital products. Research new technology and analyze tools for best fit, usage, stability and performance.
  • Communicate with both technical and non-technical colleagues to serve as a bridge between content and digital design of applications and visualizations

SKILLS  & EXPERIENCE:

  • Demonstrated ability to turn concepts into user-focused apps
  • Strong design skills and experience in print and/or digital presentation of data
  • Programming skills to develop apps for HTLM5/CSS3 environment and others that may emerge
  • Experience with a server-side scripting language such as Ruby or Python and with a server-side web development frameworks such as Rails or Django.
  • Experience in client-side programming with Javascript. Experience with D3.js and with an MVC framework such as Backbone a plus.
  • Understanding of data structures and database management, and experience with web service development a plus.
  • Strong sense of urgency, high energy and tenacity to create content for the AJC’s digital platforms.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with others, inside and outside the newsroom. 
  • Three to five years of development experience in a newsroom or other environment that mixes technical and non-technical content creators.
