News and Feature Writer

TechTarget’s Security Media Group is seeking a News and Features Writer to create articles on all aspects of information security for a variety of websites and the industry-leading Information Security Magazine.  The ideal candidate will be deadline-oriented with experience writing news and features for a print or online publication and the ability to research and produce a steady stream of original content, often on tight deadlines. High-quality writing and reporting skills are essential. Knowledge of the computer security market is a plus, as is experience interacting directly with technology experts, but reporters with an aptitude for learning about technology are encouraged to apply. Candidates will be required to develop strong knowledge of issues affecting technology professionals.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Report and write two to three news articles per week that examine product announcements, research breakthroughs, significant breaches in security, and technology trends affecting our readers;
  • Write approximately one magazine-style feature per month.
  • Establish relationships with the security community;
  • Interact regularly with readers and industry experts;
  • Work closely with site editors to develop content appropriate to their needs;
  • Contribute additional features to ezines and other special projects;  
  • Learn and implement search engine optimization (SEO) best practices in articles; and,
  • Light travel: Attend industry conferences and other events and provide timely event coverage.

 

Knowledge, skills and abilities required:

  • Three-to-six years' experience in news or features reporting for a print or online publication, specific IT journalism experience a plus;
  • Strong writing and reporting skills; ability to produce on deadline;
  • Strategic thinker and motivated learner with good organizational and communication skills; ability to collaborate with others;
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment, multitask and manage multiple deadlines;
  • Ability to adapt as the technology industry evolves;
  • Existing MS Office, PC and social media skills, and an aptitude and interest for quickly learning new media formats; and,
  • Bachelor's degree (preferably in journalism, English, or communications) or equivalent experience.
