Business reporter needed to cover the U.S. water industry
Job Status:  Full-time

Job ID: 1491756

Global Water Intelligence magazine, the world's leading monthly publication for high-value business information for the international water industry, is seeking a dedicated reporter to add to the staff of its U.S. bureau in Austin, Texas. This is an entry-level position with equivalent pay but excellent benefits.

Duties will include writing magazine-length features and some shorter new items for the Americas section of Global Water Intelligence (GWI). Applicants must be able to write clear, concise copy under strict deadlines. Extensive copy editing will also be required. The reporter will also contribute construction project updates to GWI’s U.S.-based market database, AWI Tracker.

Familiarity with AP style and proper news editing is a must, but applicants must be flexible as all copy will be written in GWI's house style. GWI's audience is made up of professionals in the global water business, including utility leaders, technology providers, policy makers, attorneys and private investors. As such, our reporters must be able to process business jargon, complex policy issues, technical lingo and hard numbers into copy that answers one question: where is one's next dollar coming from in water?

Applicants with business reporting experience are strongly preferred. Journalists who have covered infrastructure, public works, environmental regulation, technology and/or politics are also encouraged to apply. An ideal candidate would have experience with several of those beats. Candidates must be very outgoing and eager to learn quickly. GWI is an established and respected publication that rewards self-reliance and the ability to work as part of a team.

Position requirements:

1)      Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in journalism, communications or a closely related field

2)      One to two years of reporting experience (internships and non-professional or volunteer work can apply if it is professional grade)

3)      Some experience with Microsoft Excel, including basic sorting and filtering

4)      Excellent writing and copy editing skills

5)      Availability to travel several times per year

6)     Knowledge of publication and layout programs such as Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop is a definite plus but not required

Position benefits:

1)      Competitive pay

2)      Generous (and immediate) paid vacation

3)      Health and dental insurance

4)      Possible financial assistance with relocation

To begin the application process, please send a resume, reference list and three to four relevant clips to Erich Hiner at Links to articles are acceptable. No phone calls regarding this position, please. Qualified candidates will be contacted and asked to take part in a writing and editing test.
