Come join the story-telling revolution at American City Business Journals. ACBJ is currently reinventing its weekly print papers and digital products under the guidance of Mario Garcia and, most immediately, needs a designer to aid in the training, preparation and implementation of our print redesign as it rolls out to local ACBJ properties across the country. This entry-level design position reports to the Creative Director on the National Content Team and is based in Charlotte, N.C. This position requires periodic traveling.


  • Builds design and infographic templates, as well as style sheets, for local markets
  • Supports market designers on multiplatform redesign philosophy, approach and best practices
  • Assists Creative Director to ensure that design and branding follows ACBJ standards across print, digital, mobile platforms
  • Follows up with market designers and editors after implementation process has completed
  • Maintains design style guide
  • Assists Creative Director with future print and digital design projects/initiatives


  • InDesign (expert)
  • Photoshop, Illustrator, Adobe DPS (above average)
  • InCopy, HTML, CSS, Keynote/PowerPoint (working knowledge)


  • Understands how content drives design and best practices of that theory
  • Fluent in web design theory and standards
  • Speaks the language of designers, photographers and editors
  • Well-versed in typography, color theory, balance, white space, hierarchy and other core design principles
  • Keen eye for detail and meticulous in nature


  • Recent journalism/design graduate or someone with 1-3 years experience in the media or publishing field
  • The ideal candidate has worked with designers, photographers and editors in team-oriented newsrooms


  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience preferred
