Description:

The Daily Progress seeks an aggressive, skilled reporter to cover the University of Virginia in beautiful Charlottesville. The school of Jefferson is the state flagship, an elite public university renowned for its academics, storied history and picturesque campus. The university's endowment is valued at more than $5 billion and its overall annual budget runs in excess of $2.5 billion, covering thousands of employees and top programs in law, business, education, medicine and engineering and applied science. We need someone who can cultivate sources, stay atop developments on campus and in higher education and deliver leading journalism that keeps us ahead of the pack on a highly competitive beat closely followed by The Washington Post and other major news organizations. Charlottesville is nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains and home to attractions ranging from Monticello, home of Thomas Jefferson, to a rich night life, featuring such attractions as the locally based Dave Matthews Band along with a host of other national and local acts. If you're ready to push yourself and us toward greatness, we want to hear from you. This is not a job for those who've always wanted to try newspapers. It is a job for a serious journalist who views his or her work as a calling. Experience covering higher education preferred. Send a cover letter, resume, salary requirements, references and three samples of your best work to Managing Editor Lee Wolverton at lwolverton@dailyprogress.com or The Daily Progress, 685 West Rio Road, Charlottesville, VA 22901. Subject lines in emails should read, "Higher Education Reporter."
