Environmental-Development Reporter

Newsday/Tri-state Digital is seeking a dynamic reporter with at least 5 years experience at a daily newspaper, wire service or online news publication -- preferably in the New York Tri-state area – to cover the environment and development for its digital-only news operation in Westchester, Rockland and Hudson Valley counties. 

The ideal candidate will help drive coverage, break news, work a beat, write well on deadline and thrive in a fast-paced, digital environment. Must be a creative, collegial self-starter with excellent written and verbal communication skills. 

This candidate also must be savvy about growing traffic to the website and apps by regularly producing photos, videos, tweets, blog items, Facebook posts and other content for digital platforms. 

Duties:

• Generate and write clear, accurate daily stories on deadline.

• Regularly produce longer ‘weekend’ pieces and long-term projects.

• Identify trends and stories of the day, staying ahead of developments on the beat. Break news.

• Contribute regularly to blogs, Twitter and other social media. Grow a following and consistently engage the community.

• Regularly appear on News12 to discuss stories. Work with News12 and Newsday Long Island reporters and editors.

• Be a presence in the community, cultivating sources on the beat and appearing at key events to burnish the brand.

• Shoot photos and video as needed.

 Skills:

• Solid news judgment and ability to break stories.

• Skilled at coming up with original ideas above and beyond the routine, daybook stories and events. 

• Adept at juggling multiple assignments/tasks on tight deadlines.

• Skilled at writing clear, accurate, well-crafted news and feature stories.

• Adept at generating daily stories, weekend pieces, long-term projects and multimedia.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Flexible and collegial, willing to pitch in when necessary to work on a variety of assignments.

• Comfortable shooting photos and videos.

• Skilled at blogging, tweeting, using Facebook and other social media to promote stories and the brand.

• Adept at using a broad base of information systems, including wires, data banks of governmental agencies and private organizations, and various other research materials.

 Requirements:

• 5+ years experience working as a reporter at a newspaper, wire service or digital news operation.

• Bachelor's degree in Journalism or related field.

• Must be able to work from Westchester office and travel around region gathering news and covering events. Familiarity with New York Tri-state area is a plus.

• Must be a flexible, creative self-starter with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
