Breaking news reporter

Responsibilities: 

Reporting to and work with the Breaking News, Crime, Courts and Transportation editor.  This reporter will build a beat that breaks news and provides deeper and broader perspectives on public safety issues.  The reporter will be expected to tell the story behind the news in an engaging and timely fashion and as well as advance events.

The successful candidate will:

  • identify and develop stories that break news, help readers and have impact
  • report compelling enterprise stories for our Orange County audience, with a strong focus on watchdog journalism and public safety
  • execute those stories in a timely fashion and under deadline pressure
  • have a passion for aggressive local reporting and quality storytelling
  • understand that beat coverage involves more than institutional sources and is ultimately about real people
  • be able to use varied storytelling devices, choosing the best way to convey the information
  • work collaboratively with other reporters, editors, graphic artists and photographers to produce complete and engaging coverage

Qualifications:

Candidates should have demonstrated excellence as a beat reporter, and have a proven record of developing sources, breaking news, originating compelling story ideas and writing about complex issues in a clear and engaging way.  The successful candidates should have at least five years of full-time reporting experience. Excellent writing and communication skills are required.

Other qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Demonstrated aggressive use of public records and computer-assisted reporting experience
  •  Ability to recognize and develop newsworthy stories under deadline pressure
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to juggle multiple projects

Be willing to work a morning shift and weekend hours as required
