Central Connecticut Communications, publishers of the print and web New Britain Herald and The Bristol Press, as well as a weekly newspaper , is looking for an experienced managing editor who is committed to community journalism in print and online. S/he will be sharing the leadership of a newsroom of 30 in covering eight communities in the heart of the state, focusing on our print editions.. "It takes a newspaper to build a community" is under our nemplate every day, and we mean it -- we report on the positive aspects of our area, as well as the good and bad of everyday news coverage. We take pride in our local sports coverage, treating our high schools just like the pros. We work together and respect each other. We execute on new ideas quickly, and expect you to have plenty to contribute. And we hope you will help create an environment conducive to great work and good times.

Although there is no "normal" routine, you can expect to assign stories to reporters and go over their work; schedule reporters and photographers; plan and direct special projects; work closely with the publisher on companywide issues, and with the rest of the executive team in producing and executing strategic plans for the company's growth; and be the go-to person for our readers and community leaders for all things editorial -- which means taking phone calls and answering emails from our readers. On an average day, you'll post items on the web sites and on social media.

The most important part of our business is our people, so you will need to know how to hire for talent and potential, get the best out of those that join us and help them reach their potential through regular evaluation and consistent feedback, and encourage them to strive for greater challenges through their career, inside or outside the company. 

Basic prerequisites: College degree or equivalent work experience. High comfort level with the changing world of multimedia. Willingness to train, coach and mentor new and old staff in basic journalism and visual reporting. Proven experience communicating ideas and expectations to direct reports, and getting the support of peers. Proven ability to write and edit news and feature stories, design pages and feel comfortable on the web and working with social media.
