Description:

MBN is an international multi-media broadcasting non-profit corporation based in the Washington D.C. Metropolitan area. We use state of the art technologies in a digital facility multi-channel live TV 24/7 network environment broadcasting news entertainment and information in Arabic to the Arabic speaking countries of the Middle East and North Africa.

PRIMARY FUNCTION: The Production Manager is responsible for the organizational, logistical and technical aspects of production for the Current Affairs Department.  The programming portfolio under the Current Affairs Department includes daily and weekly programs: political, economic, medical, social, sporting, technology, talk shows, cultural, magazine, documentaries and special events.  The Production Manager supports the entire portfolio and works closely with all ancillary departments, as well as the staff and management of Current Affairs. The Production Manager ensures that production runs smoothly and deadlines are met in accordance with budgetary and deadline constraints. The Production Manager deals with any contingencies during production and prepares workable alternative plans for unforeseen problems in a deadline driven environment.

This position monitors show budgets, schedules and milestones. The Production Manager reports to the Executive Producer and works closely to ensure effective use of staff and budget for all production activities.

DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES: (Essential Functions: Duties and responsibilities are considered to be the essential functions of the job).

  • Develops and implements best practices to ensure effective and efficient use of human, financial and operational resources.
  • Manages daily workflow and long range planning and scheduling with Production Operations, Network Operations, IT, Domestic Production, IPD, Post Production and editorial staff to strategize, plan and manage all production activities for the Current Affairs Department.
  • On a daily basis, the Production manager acts as the principle liaison between the editorial staff and operations team to ensure efficient production process. The Production Manager is aware of all pending production elements and processes.  This includes assigning technical facilities and staffing, acquisition of remote studios (domestic and international), arranging timely technical delivery of remotely produced tape pieces and acquisitions, technical advising, budget management, and communication of deliverable specifications for the broadcast. 
  • Constructs and manages master production schedules for all Current Affairs programs and communicates changes to stakeholders.  Monitors the production process and adjusts schedules and staffing as needed while maintaining high quality standards.
  • The Production Manager prepares schedules, acquires studio and technical personnel and allocates sufficient time and resources for all aspects of the production process and communicates details to all stakeholders.
  • Coordinates with Producers and outside production companies to ensure delivery of all Current Affairs programs to Master Control.
  • Effectively manage and mentors a staff of Associate Producers and Production Assistants.  Oversees the daily activities of the AP’s and PA’s.  Ensures they are trained and executing duties to support each team.
  • Resolves problems or conflicts that hinder the completion of programs by troubleshooting according to specification.
  • Participates in the creation of each shows short-term and long-term production plan and verifies budgets.
  • Oversees set-ups, show runs and efficient breakdown of all Current Affairs shows.
  • Responsible for filling out and recording all documents pertaining to Current Affairs production.

OTHER DUTIES:

  • Ensures timely availability of important resources, talent and equipment.
  • Assist on new initiatives when directed.
  • Work with Executive Producer to plan annual Current Affairs calendar of programming events.
  • The incumbent may be asked to perform additional duties and take on other responsibilities as dictated by events and circumstances.
  • Communicates effectively with Current Affairs staff and managers.
  • Additional assignments as assigned by supervisor.

QUALIFICATION/EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism/broadcast journalism or related education and experience in the operation of television production services.
  • Computer proficient with MS Office, database, and Windows applications
  • Work experience should include in-house production and independent production companies
  • 5-6 years minimum experience in television production management.
  • Knowledge of broadcast rules, regulations and guidelines.
  • Experience in show budgeting and finance.
  • Highly developed communication skills.
  • Proven track record of effectively working with all members of production teams and outside contributors.
  • Must be able to work under pressure and provide quick turnaround against high-pressure deadlines.
  • Must be detail oriented and have the ability to work effectively with all levels of management.
  • Must be able to accommodate flexible work schedule to support 24/7 news environment including overnight coverage.
  • Ability to work independently and to deal with rapidly shifting properties.
