Media Matters seeks a politically savvy, organized individual with strong technical and rhetorical writing skills to support fundraising efforts.

About Media Matters

Media Matters is a progressive media watchdog and messaging center dedicated to challenging conservative misinformation in the media.

Job Responsibilities

Our full-time Senior Strategic Writer will help us increase our impact by:

  • Coordinating with senior and project staff to refine goals and objectives of funding proposals.

  • Writing, editing, and supervising approval process for grant proposals and narrative reports for funders.

  • Maintaining a sophisticated understanding of all projects and programs for which grants will be sought including work on gun violence prevention, climate change, immigration, and LGBT issues.

  • Staying current on the latest issues and how our work fits into and helps shape the broader political and media landscape.

  • Managing administrative processes such as the capturing of donations in an online database (experience with Salesforce software is helpful) and the creation of tax receipts for donors.

  • Leading development department's strategic planning, goal-setting, and performance measurement.

Qualifications

  • Excellent writing skills: Strong technical and rhetorical writing skills and demonstrated ability to write independently and under tight deadlines. Diverse range is critical - must be able to write about the big picture and clearly discuss specific programmatic activities.

  • Results-driven: Flexible and organized, and shows relentless commitment to meeting a high bar and a history of getting things done even in the face of obstacles.

  • Strong political instincts: In-depth knowledge of the media, how information travels through it, and policy issues shaping the news cycle.

  • Effective interpersonal skills: Proven ability to clearly communicate with varied personalities and generate buy-in among staff to move work forward.

We are most interested in these four qualities, but anticipate candidates will have at least three years of relevant experience. In addition, the ideal candidate will bring a strong commitment to excellence and fit with our collaborative culture.

Compensation

Salary commensurate with experience.
