Times Beacon Record Newspapers, a chain of community newspapers on the North Shore of Suffolk County, Long Island, is looking for an experienced full-time editor/reporter to be responsible for one or two of its weekly newspapers from start to finish.

The editor must:

-Have a minimum of two years of reporting experience 

-Have good news judgment

-Have a car and a camera; feel comfortable taking photos while reporting

-Be available to attend evening/night meetings, usually on Mon-Tues (Board of Education, Village Board, Town Board, etc.)

-Manage his/her time well

-Manage reporters/assign stories

-Edit stories

-Lay out pages using InDesign (training will be provided if the person does not have experience)


Not required, but a plus:

-Editing experience (if someone doesn't have editing experience, they will have to pass a more rigorous interview, testing process)

-Knowledge of InDesign


The editor is responsible for the newspaper from start to finish: paying attention to what's going on in the coverage area; deciding what to cover; developing sources; assigning stories and reporting and writing some themselves; editing stories from reporters; deciding where to place the story in the paper; making sure accompanying photos, headlines, etc. are prepared; laying out pages with all the elements; and, of course, meeting production deadlines.

Salary is commensurate with experience. Health insurance is provided (employer pays half, employee pays half) after a probationary period.
