The Daily Republic seeks a combination assistant editor/reporter.

We are a six-day daily print publication with an average daily circulation of 11,647, and a website reaching 50,000 people per month. We are also one of the state's best newspapers, having won the General Excellence Award in our circulation category each of the past three years in the South Dakota Newspaper Association's Better Newspapers Contest.

This position includes covering a beat as a reporter and assisting with the editing of copy and pages generated by our 13-person newsroom staff. A typical day would start at 10 a.m. and consist mostly of reporting and writing until the late afternoon, and then transition to editing some of the locally generated copy until the end of the shift at 7 p.m. The work week is Monday through Friday, with occasional later-night duty as the news requires.

This position is also tasked with running the newsroom when the editor is absent. Good communication with the editor, and cooperation in managing the newsroom and upholding standards of quality, will be vitally important.

Ideally, the successful candidate will be the kind of person who has the reporting chops that others in the newsroom will emulate, the editing skills to be trusted with other reporters' copy, and the judgment to make good decisions when the editor is away. The current editor formerly held this position, and we're looking for candidates who see themselves as future managing editor material.
