Description:

Quartz is seeking a Lifestyle & Management Editor at its Soho headquarters in New York City.

This editor will be charged with creating a framework for management and lifestyle coverage for Quartz that is smart, creative, digital, and global, and implementing it on a daily basis. The position involves daily writing, as well as editing of freelance and staff contributors.

Keys to success in this post is obsessive interest in international lifestyle and management topics and talent for writing about them with flair and creativity at the pace of a digital newsroom. Spotting developments globally worthy of coverage and quickly coming up with unique ways to frame them is an important part of the job. Business travel, design, and personal technology are among the core topics for this area.

Quartz is aimed at an international business readership that wants intelligent, engaging, thought-provoking news about the seismic changes affecting the world. We produce a wide range of material, from reported stories thousands of words long to short and snappy aggregated round-ups, as well as charts, photo-stories, interactives and more; our aim is to constantly push the boundaries of the journalistic form online.

This position reports to the editor in chief but involves working autonomously much of the time, interacting with the entire journalistic team including freelance correspondents around the globe. This is a fast-paced job.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Identifying lifestyle and management topics in the news
  • Planning lifestyle and management features
  • Writing two or more short pieces daily
  • Conceptualizing and commissioning pieces and working with authors on developing them
  • Assuming overall responsibility for the growth in the readership for Quartz coverage in this area, including by working with colleagues to ensure the content thrives in social media.

Qualifications of the Ideal Candidate:

  • 5+ years of reporting and editing experience
  • A deep interest in the coverage of global lifestyle and management topics
  • A passion, bordering on the obsessive, for clear, straightforward and engaging writing
  • A facility with data and data analysis in reporting
  • An ability to shape stories to take them beyond run-of-the-mill news, with an eye for the surprising detail or unusual angle that makes a story stand out
  • A strong background in online journalism, with a creative approach to formats, and a good visual sense
  • Extensive experience with online publishing or blogging platforms, social media and digital tools
  • Excellent communication skills, an ability to multi-task and prioritize, and strong attention to detail
  • International experience and foreign languages a strong plus

Core Attributes:

  • Force of Ideas - At the center of Atlantic Media work are the ideas within our writing.  We believe that ideas – to the good and not – have consequence.  Our highest work is bringing rigor, insight, intellectual honesty, to that ultimate purpose of separating the bad from the good, giving voice, argument, and flight to the latter.
  • Spirit of Generosity - Atlantic Media seeks in its ranks a spirit of generosity – a natural disposition in each colleague toward service and selfless conduct.  Atlantic Media writing should be cut from the same cloth – critical on the merits but informed by charity and forbearance in measuring motive and personal character.
