Our teams are growing and our Content team has an immediate need for a News Editor in our Houston, TX office.  As a News Editor you will cover oil and gas exploration, development, and recruitment trends on the Rigzone.com website by producing shorter daily news stories and in-depth weekly features. 

In this position you will:

  • Produce well-written, multi-sourced stories that are engaging, accurate, and balanced
  • Expand depth of stories through thorough research and interviews
  • Establish understanding of readership needs and actively grows a source list
  • Contribute frequently to interactive digital media activities (i.e. blogs and social media)
  • Share and leverage information resources across the organization
  • Stay current in knowledge of key companies in content focus area
  • Generate story ideas through news research, utilizing Rigzone’s databases (RigLogix and Subsea IQ), and attending industry events
  • To be positioned as a “beat expert” internally and externally

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BA degree and at least 5+ years of reporting and writing experience
  • Excellent research and analytical capabilities
  • Good communication skills that implement listening; concise written style; and good verbal skills. Ability to communicate across a wide range of groups and personalities
  • Ability to use independent judgment in making decisions
  • Works well in a team environment, focusing on collaboration and adapting to daily needs and deadlines. Also coaches and mentors more junior reporters
  • Possesses good computer skills including a basic understanding of Microsoft Office, experience in content management systems a plus
  • Regularly seeks new learning opportunities and displays a keen sense of curiosity
  • Understanding of standard methodologies and procedures related to online publishing
  • Understanding of basic upstream oil and gas industry terminology and processes
  • Self motivation and ability to work under deadline pressure
