Organization Description

Most of the world's poor are farmers, representing the largest and most uniform group of poor people in the world. One Acre Fund is a start–up non-profit in Kenya, Rwanda, and Burundi that is innovating a new way of helping farm families to achieve their full potential. Instead of giving handouts, One Acre invests in farmers to generate a permanent gain in farm income. We provide farmers with a "market bundle" that includes education, finance, seed and fertilizer, and market access. Our program is proven impactful – every year, we weigh thousands of harvests and measure more than 100% average gain in farm income per acre. We have laser–like focus on generating better lives for the people that we serve.

We are growing quickly. In seven years, we have grown to serve 137,000 farm families with more than 1400 full–time field staff. In three more years, we will at least triple in size, while adding several new countries. Our approach has won widespread validation, winning grants from the highly competitive Echoing Green and Skoll Foundations, and the global Financial Times/ IFC award for "basic needs financing" in 2010 and 2011. In 2012 One Acre Fund will spend about $20m USD, and in 2013 about $30m USD – although a majority of our funding comes from operational revenue, we still fundraise a significant amount of money and will continue to do so.  Website: www.oneacrefund.org

Job Description

The media relations manager will be One Acre Fund’s first full-time staff person focused on building relationships with the media. We believe that we have a unique viewpoint to add to the conversation on agriculture development, and would like to represent the smallholder farmer directly and increase her voice in media.

The media relations manager will establish and manage relationships with targeted journalists to increase their coverage of One Acre Fund’s work. The role will focus on sharing information with journalists about asset-based financing and One Acre Fund’s unique approach to serving smallholder farmers, as well as the importance of smallholder-farmer led agriculture development.

 Responsibilities will include:

·         Establish and maintain a network of 25-40 relationships with targeted journalists

·         Develop and maintain a large database of media contacts that are relevant to One Acre Fund’s work

·         Pitch stories to journalists based on relevant news events and/or relevant One Acre Fund milestones

·         Serve as the first point of contact for all media, fielding all incoming media requests, managing staff interviews, and coordinating multimedia for stories

·         Manage the One Acre Fund blog, e-mail newsletter, and social media

·         Produce content for One Acre Fund’s regular communications materials, including presentations, background papers, marketing brochures, and annual report

·         Serve as a spokesperson for One Acre Fund at conferences and events

Career Growth and Development

One Acre Fund is a rapidly-growing organization. Accordingly, we invest in building management and leadership skills. We provide constant, actionable feedback delivered through weekly feedback and through regular career reviews. We also have regular one–on–one meetings, where we listen to and discuss career goals, and work collaboratively to craft roles that each person can be passionate about. This role could grow to manage a team of communications staff in East Africa.

Qualifications

We are seeking an exceptional professional with at least 5+ years of experience. We are looking for a unique set of characteristics:

·         Excellent knowledge of print and online media landscape (TV is useful, but not necessary)

·         Previous experience as journalist or in a media outreach or public relations role

·         Clear and concise writer. We are looking for someone who is skilled at translating complicated ideas into clear, energetic prose.

·         *Business mind. All spokespeople at One Acre Fund must be able to talk credibly about our business. We tell the compelling stories of farmers, but we couple that together with an equally-compelling picture of our growth and appropriate operational detail.

·         Familiarity with the fields of agriculture development and social enterprise.

·         Hard worker. We are looking for a self-motivated person that will consistently put in a 100% performance for our farmers.

·         Humility and personal sustainability. We are seeking a passionate professional that combines strong leadership skills with good humor, patience, and a humble approach to service.

Location: New York
Preferred Start Date: Flexible
Compensation: Commensurate with experience.
Benefits: Health cover in our group plan, 401k, matching education fund contributions.
Career Development: Bi-annual management consulting-style career reviews, and significant investment in career development.
