Company: Understanding Government
Position:
Seeking online managing editor
Location:
District of Columbia
Job Status:  Temporary
Ad Expires:
May 10, 2013
Job ID: 1482783

Description:

Understanding Government seeks managing editor with daily news and investigative reporting experience who has run an online news and commentary website (Drupal, Wordpress preferred) and has an interest in civic engagement and policy implementation in the executive branch.   Editing involves a combination of aggregation posts, longer original reporting, and site features.  You'll also be writing a few posts a week and doing some social media promotion and oversight.  Compensation is competitive with similar-sized non-profits and a successful candidate will have opportunities to grow.

Understanding Government is a non-profit created in 1999 by Charles Peters, founding editor of the Washington Monthly, to practice and promote reporting on federal agencies and the executive branch of government.  We've fulfilled our mission in a number of different ways over the years, ranging from in-depth reports on government agencies to a news-oriented website about federal agencies to creating a Prize for Preventive Journalism.  Beginning in 2009-2010 we started working on a concept for a new website that would focus on the way the federal government works in people's lives.  Last July, with seed money from major philanthropic foundations and individual donors, we launched GIMBY (Government in My Backyard).  We're growing a nationwide audience for GIMBY and are looking to take the site to the next level.

Please send a brief cover note, a resumé, and links to a few representative clips (reporting and/or editing) to info (at) understandinggov.org.  No calls please.  All submissions will be receive a thorough review but we regret that we will only be able to follow up with a few candidates and appreciate your understanding.
