PRESS SECRETARY

 

Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer seeks a Press Secretary to be part of his energetic, collaborative and innovative team. The Press Secretary will report to the Director of Communications to help manage media relations, conceptualize and organize press conferences, draft and distribute a wide variety of press materials, and periodically edit position papers and policy briefs. This position calls for an independent self-starter who can forge a productive working relationship with the Borough President, take on major responsibilities and also work well with the Director of Communications.  

 

Specific Responsibilities/Duties will include:

 

  • Handle daily press inquiries and manage interactions with reporters;
  • Develop relationships with columnists, reporters, and editors to help pitch Borough President initiatives;
  • Provide prompt responses to press inquiries and requests for information;
  • Oversee and manage the Communication Unit’s creation and dissemination of social media;
  • Assist with conceptualizing, organizing and managing press events;
  • Write and distribute materials including press releases, columns, media advisories, quotes and statements, via print,radio, TV and social media outlets. 
  • Meet regularly with Borough President office staffers to identify, develop and execute press initiatives based on the office’s work in Manhattan’s diverse communities and with myriad City agencies.
  • Edit position papers and policy briefs, plus other issue-based materials that lend themselves to media dissemination; and
  • Assist the Director of Communications on short-term and long-term media strategies.

 

 

Specific Job Requirements include:

 

  • Strong organizational skills to handle multiple projects simultaneously;
  • Comfort with flexible and long working hours, including weekend and evening work;
  • Exceptional writing, editing and oral communication skills, often under deadline pressure; and
  • Ability to work well with other staff members and media representatives.

 

Qualifications

 

  • Previous media relations, public affairs or journalism experience;
  • Familiarity with the New York City media and political environment is strongly preferred;
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills;
  • Track record of aggressive media outreach and proven ability to manage press events; and
  • Knowledge of New York City government and working for an elected official is preferred.

 

New York City residency is required within 90 days of appointment.  However, City employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for two (2) continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
