The Merced Sun-Star, a McClatchy daily and one of the best of its size in the country, is looking for an ambitious and talented healthcare reporter to join our award-winning news team in a temporary full-time 1-year assignment with the possibility of it being extended for another 18 months The California Endowment will underwrite the entire cost of that reporter for the assignment.

The city and county of Merced-located in the San Joaquin Valley and within two hours of Yosemite, San Francisco and Monterey comprise a red-hot news center in every way.  Our stories get picked up regionally and nationally.  The healthcare beat is of critical importance and value to our readers and advertisers.  We’ve partnered with the California HealthCare Foundation’s Center for Health Reporting at the USC Annenberg School on three in-depth health care-related series.  We need a reporter devoted full-time to the beat.  And because 55 percent of our county is Latino, our healthcare beat reporter must be fluent in English and Spanish as well as demonstrate strong reporting and writing skills.  Salary is competitive for the area, benefits include health and 401(k).  Besides contributing significantly to print, our reporters are expected to turn out equally strong content for our online product.

If you are interested in working in a fast-paced, solution-oriented, flexible and fun newsroom environment that’s set the bar high for both online and print journalism, we’d welcome your resume.  Please send resume to

A pre-placement physical and drug screen is required.   Acceptable driving record and dependable transportation required.  Deadline to apply:  Please apply immediately!
