Description:

With approximately 5,800 students, Kilgore College is a student-centered institution characterized by excellence in teaching and learning.  Kilgore College is a two-year, public community college located in East Texas.  We are an open-door, student centered-institution characterized by excellence in teaching and learning.  The instructor is responsible to the Communications and Theatre Department chair and to the Dean of Liberal and Fine Arts.
Communications is a part of the Liberal and Fine Arts Division, which also includes history, government, social and behavioral sciences, fine art, commercial art, theatre, music, philosophy, speech, photography, and education. The division includes 35 full-time faculty members and currently offers nine communications courses and the associated labs.

The communications program’s purpose is to prepare students, upon graduation, for immediate employment in the communications field and/or to admission to senior colleges and universities to complete a bachelor’s degree in communications or a related field. The college has three two-year communications Fields of Study leading to an associate’s degree.
The communications instructor is responsible for teaching the majority of the communications courses; advising the production of the college’s newspaper, The Flare, which is currently published 10 times per semester and is posted and up-dated online; and co-advising the production of the college’s general-interest magazine, The Flare Magazine, which is published annually. These publications result from the communications/photography lab courses for the students.
The communications instructor selects a limited number of communications students to attend both the Texas Community College Communications Association. conference and competition in the fall and the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association. conference and competition in the spring and serves as college chaperon for these events. The Kilgore College communications program has a long history of excellence, having won Sweepstakes 22 of the last 24 years in TCCJA competition, having won Sweepstakes 22 of the last 26 years in TIPA competition, and having been named best non-daily college and university newspaper in Texas the last three years by the Texas Associated Press Managing Editors Association.
The communications lab is state-of-the-art and is equipped with more than 25 Apple computers. These computers are for the exclusive use of communications and photography students and are not available to the general student population.
The communications instructor position includes a nine-month contract, with the possibility of teaching one of two summer terms.

Applicants must have a master’s degree with at least 18 graduate hours in communications (journalism), a minimum of three years of successful full-time teaching experience, and an understanding and appreciation for the community college concept. Professional experience in communications is preferred. Applicants must also be well versed in Apple operating systems and prepared to teach students all aspects of journalistic production using these systems, including InDesign CS6 and PhotoShop CS6. 

The nine-month salary for a new faculty member is based upon level of education, years of teaching experience, and years of related work experience.  Base salaries, excluding pay for previous experience, range from $40,700 for a master’s degree to $43,700 for a doctorate. Advising student publications carries an additional $5,000 stipend. Overload and summer classes are paid separately.   Health, life, and income protection insurance are provided. An excellent retirement program through either the Teacher Retirement System or Optional Retirement Program and generous paid leave time are also furnished.  In addition, full-time employees have free use of the college’s recreational/fitness facilities and tuition scholarships are available for the employee and dependent children.
