Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an independent, not-for-profit, non-governmental multi-stakeholder organization, established to promote the responsible management of the world’s forests. Today, FSC is the leading forest management certification system in the world. FSC works by bringing people together to promote responsible forest management and to find solutions to the problems created by bad forestry practices. FSC does so by providing standard-setting, trademark assurance, accreditation services and business value for companies and organizations interested in responsible forestry.

Products carrying the FSC label are independently certified to assure consumers that they come from forests that are managed to meet the social, economic and ecological needs of present and future generations.

FSC is registered as an international NGO in Mexico, but has its operational headquarters in Bonn, Germany. FSC has 4 Regional Offices and is represented through National Offices or Representatives in 45 countries across the world.

Purpose of the role

With a new Executive Director in place since 1 October 2012, FSC wants to take its global visibility to new levels through proactive strategic communication led by a dynamic and experienced Communications Director.

The Communications Director is responsible for the strategic direction and operational implementation of FSC International’s Communications efforts and for securing a consistent voice of FSC across its national operations. He or she is also responsible for developing FSC’s communications strategy and for its implementation globally and in collaboration with FSC’s Network Partners.

Main Responsibilities

The Communications Director leads and manages FSC’s Communications Unit, which is tasked to establish and maintain best practice to support all FSC operations as follows:

 

·         Develop and implement a clear and focused FSC communications strategy that contributes to the overall FSC Strategic Plan (next version being developed now for 2014-16) and ensure the uptake and implementation of the communications strategy across the FSC Network.

·         Strengthen FSC’s mission-driven communications efforts towards external audiences through media work and through relations with government, media and leading FSC stakeholders including multinational companies, environmental NGOs, trade unions, indigenous peoples’ organizations and others.

·         Grow FSC’s relationships with key journalists and publications globally to elevate the quality and quantity of positive media coverage.

·         Work with Network Partners to identify, develop and share compelling stories of FSC’s impact.

·         Cooperate closely with FSC’s Quality Assurance Unit to avert negative publicity and ensure strong crisis communications both at the international level and in the relevant countries through FSC’s national partners.

 

·         Serve as a spokesperson for FSC with media and in presentations, and represent FSC at relevant events, conferences and global meetings.

·         Provide advice to the Senior Management Team, the FSC Board of Directors and the FSC Network on Communications.

·         Develop speeches and written communication for organizational leaders, including the Executive Director and Board Chair.

·         Oversee opinion research and develop organizational messages to provide clear and consistent communications across all audiences.

·         Develop and grow FSC’s online profile including web and social media.

·         Lead the development of media assets and communications materials that support the FSC strategic plan.

·         Work in close alignment with the Executive Director and the Director of Business Development to refine, support and implement FSC’s organizational brand strategy.

·         Develop and implement a communications strategy for the triennial FSC General Assembly (next to be held in 2014).

·         Develop communications metrics to evaluate impact and communicate progress to the Senior Management Team and the FSC Board on a regular basis.

 

Skills and Experience required

The successful candidate demonstrates the following key competencies and qualities:

 

·         University degree in a relevant field (communications, international relations, ecology, development studies).

·         At least 10 years of solid experience in a relevant field, with at least 5 years in a position of senior leadership.

·         Extensive experience in working with media and with crisis communications.

·         Extensive experience in designing and implementing successful communications strategies for NGOs or businesses.

·         Outstanding level of written and verbal communications skills. Fluency in English (spoken and written), Spanish as a bonus.

·         Extensive experience with motivating and managing teams of staff and partners.

·         Proven skills in budgeting, goal-setting and reporting.

·         Proven knowledge and experience of new and emerging trends in communications, including experience of web and social media.

·         Ability to work well as a member of a multi-cultural, inter-disciplinary, multi-lingual, global team.

·         Commitment to FSC’s mission, values and structures.

·         Familiarity with the scope of FSC’s programs of standard setting, accreditation, trademark management and political engagement.

·         Ability to represent FSC through his/her work as a whole with exemplary personal and professional authority and conduct.
