The University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS) Office of Communications is seeking a web writer to deliver content to a diverse audience while collaborating with news writers, public relations, and social media specialists. Under the direction of the IFAS Web Manager and as part of the IFAS web team, this position serves as a writing expert and works with IFAS faculty and staff to identify scholarly research and other programs suitable for web and social media stories, writes and edits stories, arranges photo and video to accompany stories, maintains IFAS web sites and provides social media training to IFAS faculty and staff.

Duties:  Engage with the general audiences accessing our websites. Ensure websites meet UF and IFAS guidelines prior to approval. Create and provide instruction and communications training on social media, including, but not limited to, Facebook, Twitter, basic “how-to,” best practices, and analytics. Assist with the writing of other web training initiatives. Establish and understand ethical and legal guidelines related to IFAS Blogs. Monitor and contribute to the UF/IFAS blog on a consistent basis- this includes comment moderation.  Collect, create, and post articles of interest to consumer audiences in Florida via the web. This includes content collection, writing articles, as well as website formatting and editing (basic HTML). Managing includes keeping links updated, checking for grammar and spelling, and basic photo manipulation. Ensure websites meet UF and IFAS guidelines prior to approval. This also includes monitoring, managing, and responding to e-mails in the UF/IFAS Web e-mail inboxes. Work other various web related tasks as requested.  Responsible for maintenance and regular updates to the main IFAS website, IFAS calendars (run by Google Calendar), and requested updates to IFAS websites. Responsible for updating and migrating outdated IFAS websites to current official templates as requested by the Web Team manager.

Minimum Qualifications:  Master’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization; or a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization and two years of appropriate experience.

Preferred Qualifications:  Excellent written communication skills. The ability to write appropriately for a web format in a clear, simple, and straightforward style. The ability to understand scientific documents/writing and edit/adapt the information for general public audiences. The ability to understand issues that are important to Florida residents statewide relating to agriculture, natural resources, nutrition and healthy lifestyles, landscaping and conservation, sustainability, financial management, and more. The ability to research IFAS resources for potential article sources. Experience or familiarity with HTML templates, Dreamweaver, Photoshop, and Google Calendar and other Google web products. Experience or familiarity with social media platforms and best practices including Twitter and Facebook account management as it relates to audience engagement. Requires the ability to work independently, collaboratively, and to think creatively.
